Frequently asked questions about the night train to Austria

Here you will find answers to some of the most common questions about the journey.

Can I book a package vacation with train and accommodation?

Yes! To make it easy to book your entire ski trip with train, accommodation, transfer and lift pass, Snälltåget cooperate with Skinetworks, which is the Nordic region's largest tour operator for ski trips, where the well-known brand Nortlander is included. Package trips by train can be booked at Nortlander.se (opens in new tab).

Can I book the train journey only?

Yes, you can book the train journey only or a train journey with a connecting transfer via the online booking system at the top of this page or on the homepage.

Berths and private compartments are normally sold as return journeys, but any remaining availability may sometimes be sold as one-way tickets closer to departure. The exception is the departure from Austria on 20 December 2025, where one-way tickets are always available.

All tickets are personal, so the correct passenger details must be entered when booking.

Which ski resorts are suitable for families with children?

Several family-friendly ski areas in Austria are easily reached with Snälltåget:

  • Ski amadé in Salzburger Land is one of Europe’s largest ski areas and is well suited for families. Travel to St. Johann im Pongau and continue by transfer to destinations such as Bad Gastein, Wagrain or Schladming.
  • Zell am See–Kaprun is another popular option where you can book your journey all the way to Zell am See, with the ski slopes within walking distance of the station.
  • From Zell am See you can also reach Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, a large and varied ski area, in around 30 minutes by bus.
  • Kitzbühel and SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser – Brixental are also popular areas for families. To reach SkiWelt, travel via Wörgl and continue by ski bus to the ski area.

At Austria Tourism (opens in a new tab) you can find more tips for family-friendly ski areas.

What comfort options are available on the night train?

You can choose between a Seat, First Class Seat, a Berth in a shared compartment, or a Private compartment. If you are travelling together, a private compartment is usually the most comfortable option.

Seat
A standard seat in a saloon carriage or compartment.

First Class Seat
A wider and more comfortable armchair. A pillow, blanket and sheet are included.

Berth in shared compartment
You share the compartment with other travellers (up to 6 people). The compartment is converted from seating into berths for the night.

Private compartment
A private compartment for you and your party (up to 6 people). The compartment is converted into night mode and bed linen is provided.

Read more about our different comfort options and price categories.

How much luggage can we bring?

You may bring one suitcase, one ski boot bag and one piece of hand luggage per person. Please avoid packing everything into one large suitcase for the entire group – dividing your luggage into several bags makes it easier to store on board.

If you are travelling in the Seat category, luggage is placed under the seat in front of you and on the overhead rack above. There is also a luggage rack at one end of the carriage for larger suitcases.

If you are travelling in a Berth in a shared compartment or a Private compartment, luggage is placed on an overhead rack and under the lower berth (see the illustration below). If you book a private compartment, you may also use an empty berth for luggage or skis.

Please remember to pre-book ski check-in. The number of ski spaces is limited and costs SEK 698 return. The maximum weight for one ski set is 10 kg. Ski boots should be brought with you to your seat or compartment. If you are travelling in the Seat category or in a Berth in a shared compartment, ski check-in is mandatory.

Can I travel with pets to Austria?

No, it’s not possible to travel with pets on our trains to and from Austria.

This is because there are the stops at the stations are not long enough on this route, and therefore provide no opportunities to let dogs or other pets out of the train, making the journey an impractical option for pets.

How do the transfer buses from the train work?

The transfer buses are operated in cooperation with Skinetworks and connect with the train’s arrival and departure. The buses run between the stations and several ski resorts in the area.

Read more about the transfer bus stops in Austria.

Can I change my booking or get a refund?

When you purchase a ticket on Snälltåget.se, you can rebook your ticket if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure (or 7 days before for a private compartment on night trains). Refundable tickets are also available for an additional fee.

For package tours including Snälltåget, the tour operator's terms for cancellation and refund apply.

For journeys with Snälltåget's night trains to Austria, train numbers 304/305, special ticket rules apply. The journey can only be purchased as a return trip, and it is not possible to cancel only one of the trips. This also applies to connecting routes that the customer has purchased in the same booking.

Read more about rebooking tickets, refunds, and special conditions.

Are Interrail passes valid on the night train to Austria?

Interrail is only valid for travel in the Seat category. However, we sell last-minute tickets for a Berth in a shared compartment (24 hours before departure) and a Private compartment (7 days before departure), subject to availability.

For the departure from Austria on 19 December 2025, it is also possible to book and travel with an Interrail pass in other comfort categories than Seat.

You need a seat reservation to travel with Interrail.

Read more about how to book a seat reservation with Interrail.

How environmentally friendly is the train to Austria?

Snälltåget uses green energy from water, wind and sun to reduce the environmental impact of your journey.

A train journey for one person from Malmö or Copenhagen to Zell am See back and forth means an emission of about 1.2 kg CO2. In this calculation we have included the losses in the electricity network and the impact that the various renewable power sources have on the environment.

A flight Kastrup–Innsbruck / Salzburg with SAS A320NEO equals 267 kg CO2, but then there is a bus transfer is added on top of that. The same trip with a petrol-powered Volvo V60 corresponds to 128 kg CO2 per person with four people in the car. A bus that runs on fossil-free HVO fuel emits about 8 kg of CO2 per person.
