ID documents and travel documents

Snälltåget tickets are personal. You must therefore be able to present valid identification during the ticket inspection. Which documents are accepted depends on whether you are travelling within Sweden, between the Nordic countries or to a country outside the Nordic region.

Travel to Germany and other countries outside the Nordic region

For cross-border travel outside the Nordic region, all passengers, including children, must have a valid travel document.

The following travel documents are accepted:

  • Passport with an MRZ code.
  • National ID card meeting EU standards, with an MRZ code or chip, issued by a national authority within the EU/EEA.

The travel document must be presented to the train crew during the ticket inspection if requested.

Please note that a Swedish driving licence is not a valid travel document for travel to countries such as Germany.

For cross-border travel outside the Nordic region, you must also provide the passenger’s first name, surname, date of birth and the country of issue of the passport when making the booking.

Read more about valid Swedish travel documents on the Swedish Police website (opens in a new tab).

Travel between the Nordic countries

For Nordic citizens, a driving licence issued in a Nordic country is accepted as identification when travelling between the Nordic countries.

A passport or national ID card as described above is also accepted.

Travel within Sweden

When travelling within Sweden, you must be able to present valid identification during the ticket inspection.

The following documents are accepted:

  • Passport with an MRZ code.
  • National ID card meeting EU standards, with an MRZ code or chip, issued by a national authority within the EU/EEA.
  • Nordic ID cards.
  • LMA cards issued by the Swedish Migration Agency.

Children and ID documents

When travelling outside the Nordic region, children must also have a valid travel document.

When travelling within Sweden, children under the age of 16 may travel with a parent or legal guardian without identification. If there is any doubt, the child must be able to present valid identification.

Personal tickets

All Snälltåget tickets are personal and cannot be transferred to another person. The name on the ticket must therefore match the passenger’s identity, and valid identification must be presented to the train crew during the ticket inspection if requested.
